electricity consumption surged from 2,688 megawatts at the end of 2023 to 5,341 megawatts, a considerable increase largely fueled by generative AI demands. By 2026, global electricity consumption for data centers is projected to reach 1,050 terawatts.
To keep in perspective, this is comparable to the annual power consumption of entire countries like Spain or the Netherlands. A single ChatGPT question consumes ten times the electricity of a Google search, showing the immense energy needed for generative AI.

Apart from electricity, AI also demands vast amounts of water. Cooling the powerful servers in data centers requires large amounts of water use, leading to great consequences. The cooling systems often contaminate the water supply with harmful substances such as lead and mercury, posing risks to ecosystems and human health. With the fast advancement of technology and environmental degradation, it is a rapidly growing concern for sustainability advocated.
While there are great benefits to AI, its environmental footprint cannot be ignored. Policymakers tech companies, and consumers must push for greener alternatives. Considering renewable energy and improved cooling technologies to reduce AI’s growing impact on the planet.

However, critics argue that these efforts are not enough to offset the rapidly increasing demand for AI-driven computing power.
While AI offers immense benefits, its environmental footprint cannot be ignored. Policymakers, tech companies, and consumers must push for greener alternatives. Investing in renewable energy sources, developing more efficient cooling technologies, and implementing sustainable AI practices are essential to mitigating AI’s growing impact on the planet. Additionally, improving AI algorithms to enhance energy efficiency could significantly reduce power consumption without compromising technological advancements.
